In the ZDF studio, a bet is made about the European Championship match between England and Denmark, but Per Mertesacker ends up losing it. The 2014 football world champion immediately pays off his debt. It’s like the Masters in Augusta.
The big favorite England just can’t seem to get going at the European Championships. After a narrow 1-0 win against Serbia in the opening match, the second match against Denmark only managed a 1-1 draw. The British once again played inhibitedly, defensively and without inspiration. Christoph Kramer, the 2014 world champion and humorous expert on ZDF, expected this. The midfielder from Borussia Mönchengladbach had already come out as a skeptic of the English coach Gareth Southgate during the Serbia match.
Before the match, Kramer was asked by presenter Jochen Breyer: “If you were the Danish coach, how would you play?” His answer: “Start high. I’ll bet Per’s jacket that the English will win by a maximum of one goal difference, if at all.”

He was referring to Per Mertesacker, who had become world champion together with Kramer and was also in the ZDF studio in Berlin as an expert. In a green suit, by the way. Merteacker immediately said: “I’ll bet against it.”
Mertesacker like at the Masters
After the game, there was only one topic of conversation. Breyer demanded that Mertesacker pay off his bet. And if the former defender had hoped to be allowed to keep his jacket, he was disappointed. Kramer insisted on cashing it in. However, he himself did not want the jacket of the much taller Mertesacker. So he asked the audience: “Is there a tall person who needs a jacket? Or a short person who needs a blanket?”

Kramer chose a man who was wearing a Hertha BSC jersey: “With this jacket, you’re the banger of Berlin’s nightlife today.” The man stood up and Mertesacker handed it to him like “at the Masters in Augusta,” as he himself noted.
