Jude Bellingham rescued England from defeat against Slovakia. With the score at 1-1 after normal time ended, the game went into extra time.
The Course of the Match
England took the initiative to attack, but Slovakia created the first chance. Juraj Kucka’s shot went narrowly wide, after which David Hancko had space and time to shoot even though the ball went off target.
Amidst England’s onslaught, Slovakia launched a dangerous counter-attack in the 12th minute. After winning the ball in midfield, Ondrej Duda’s pass to Luka Haraslin was continued with a stab from the left side of the penalty box.
Kobbie Mainoo made a crucial block to deny Slovakia. Jordan Pickford can secure the ball.
England had a good chance in the 23rd minute. Jude Bellingham weaved his way into the box, Harry Kane headed wide from a left-hand cross. Mainoo then shot wide from outside the area.
Just two minutes later, Slovakia opened the scoring! Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead 1-0.
A long pass from the middle of the field was headed by Juraj Kucka. David Strelec sent a pass for Schranz to finish with a low kick into the bottom corner of the England goal.
Before halftime, England continued to put pressure on the Slovak defense. Mainoo’s shot from outside the penalty box was off the mark, then the attack which started from the set piece was broken.
The score of 1-0 for Slovakia’s advantage lasted until half-time.
England started the second half strongly. Phil Foden scored a goal back, although it had to be disallowed for offside.
England almost conceded again due to a blunder. Strelec who was near the center circle managed to get the ball, then fired a long-range shot towards the goal. Pickford was standing far in front, the ball went over his head but just wide.
Past the 70th minute, another chance for England. Foden’s free-kick from the left wing is met by Kane with a header in the middle of the box. The ball goes wide.
Declan Rice’s kick from outside the penalty box went fast before hitting the Slovakia goal post. Kane grabbed the rebound, but his volley failed to meet the target.
The British attack broke down again. Martin Dubravka punched his cross from the right wing, which ultimately resulted in a goal kick.
GOAL! England finally scored a goal in return through Jude Bellingham in injury time. The score changed to 1-1 and the game continued into extra time.
