Euro 2024: Evidence of England’s fading attack

Cologne

England’s appearance at Euro 2024 has made many supporters annoyed because they are too passive. Statistics show that Gareth Southgate’s team does play defensively.

England again failed to win, after being held by Slovenia 0-0 in the third match of Group C Euro 2024. This was the second draw after 1-1 against Denmark, with the only victory achieved over Serbia 1-0.

These results were enough for England to qualify as group winners with five points. Denmark and Slovenia occupy second and third positions with three points, and are also certain of qualifying for the last 16 of the 2024 European Cup.

Even though they qualified and won the group, England was criticized by most of their supporters. The Three Lions’ performance was far from convincing and was deemed not to match the team’s potential.

In the first two matches, for example, England were considered to have withdrawn too quickly after scoring a goal. For the record, England beat Serbia with a goal in the 13th minute and took the lead over Denmark with a goal in the 18th minute.

Statistics confirm that England are indeed giddy and dim when attacking. An average of 9.7 shots per match only puts them in 20th position out of 24 participating teams.

England also average only 17.3 touches in the opponent’s penalty box, as reported Sky Sports. That ranked them 16th out of all teams.

But it could be that Gareth Southgate has instructed his team to focus more on defense. Because England is currently one of the teams with the best defensive aspects.

They only allow opponents an average of 8.7 shots. That record is the fourth best at Euro 2024 so far. England also has the lowest expected goals against, or Expected goals against, at 0.38.

But this defense will be tested again in the knockout phase, when England face stronger teams.
