Euro 2024: Schär, the Swiss defender played for more than 70 minutes with… a broken nose

This is an example which could perhaps inspire Kylian Mbappé, victim of a broken nose on Monday, during the Euro 2024 match against Austria (1-0) and uncertain for the match against the Netherlands this Friday. Fabian Schär, the Swiss central defender, revealed after the match against Scotland (1-1) on Wednesday evening that he had played for 70 minutes with a broken nose.

Six minutes after scoring against his side by deflecting Scott McTominay’s shot (0-1, 13th), the Newcastle player was injured in a collision with Scottish defender Anthony Ralston (19th) on a Swiss corner.

If both players remained on the ground and the match was interrupted for a few minutes, they got up. Schär therefore played, as if nothing had happened, with a broken nose, never reluctant to go to the duel despite the pain. “My nose is broken,” he declared on Blue Sport at the end of the match.

The 32-year-old defender had already suffered this same injury in 2018.

Switzerland being almost qualified, he should logically remain rested during the last group match on Sunday against Germany.
