Euro 2024: What are the rules for deciding between teams in the event of a tie in Group E?

The suspense is at its height in Group E of Euro 2024. With three points each, Belgium, Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia can all still qualify for the round of 16.

The final day, scheduled for this Wednesday at 6 p.m. with Belgium-Ukraine and Romania-Slovakia, should make it possible to decide between the four nations, but a tie is possible. Several criteria have been planned if this scenario occurs.

The first is the result of direct confrontation. If two teams are tied, it is the team winning their confrontation which will finish ahead in the standings. In the event of a draw, we move on to the second criterion. And if the four teams are tied, as is currently the case, same scenario. It will therefore be the goal difference between the teams concerned which will take precedence.

If fairness persists, we move on to the number of goals scored in these same matches. We then move on to the general goal difference, then to the number of goals scored over the entire group stage.

Two final criteria were established: the lowest number of disciplinary points – red cards are worth 3 points, yellow cards 1 point – and the general ranking during the qualifiers. The four nations, however, hope to win and escape these very difficult calculations.
