Euro 2024: why France did a (very) bad deal by finishing second in Group D

A very bad deal. By conceding a draw against Poland on Tuesday evening in Dortmund (1-1), France carried out a very bad operation.

This result combined with Austria’s victory against the Netherlands (3-2) forced the Blues to finish in second place in Group D of the Euro. A simple victory, which they held until the 79th minute, would have allowed them to finish first. And it’s very far from being a detail, since they fall into a part of the table where many big names appear. “The complicated part of the painting? I like this ! », laughed Eduardo Camavinga in the mixed zone.

In the round of 16, the Blues will meet the second-placed team in Group E. The four teams in this group (Belgium, Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia) can still qualify before the last day, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. If they don’t come up against the Red Devils, their opponent will be, on paper, affordable.

But it is afterwards, in the event of qualification for the quarter-finals, that things will get tough.

The French would find Portugal in the quarter, solid leader of Group F already qualified, or a third in the group. If they pass this obstacle, Spain or Germany could then stand in their way in the semi-final! “In any case, it was going to be complicated, it’s the Euro,” midfielder Youssouf Fofana wanted to put into perspective after the meeting on Tuesday. And I’m not sure that these nations are very happy to see us in this part either. »

The assurance of shocks, but a much more complicated course than if they had finished first. The Blues would then have found the second of group F in the eighth (Turkey, Georgia or Czechia) in a much less tough part of the table without a leader for the moment.
