It’s a celebration for Turkey and Georgia, who have reached two historic qualifications for the round of 16 of the European Championships thanks to two victories, respectively against the Czech Republic and Portugal, on the last day of Group F. Portugal has already qualified, as the first in the group: now they will face Slovenia. The Turks have not reached the round of 16 for 16 years; for the Georgians it is the first time in their history.
Montella’s team won 2-1 over the Czechs after also risking a knockout which would have meant farewell to the tournament: Calhanoglu broke the deadlock in the 6th minute of the second half but in the 21st minute Soucek found the equalizer. The Czech Republic also came close to making it 2-1 but in the fourth minute of injury time Tosum definitively closed the matter. Turkey will now face Austria.
Georgia, on the other hand, accomplished the feat that few believed in: they beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 2-0, already qualified as first in the group. Thanks to Kvaratskhelia, finally in form for the “Napoli Scudetto”, and to Mikautadze, still scoring and top scorer of the tournament with three goals. But the result is also a demerit for the Portuguese team, who were already certain of qualification before the match, and appeared imprecise and not very determined. The Georgians, third in the group, will face Spain on Sunday.
