European Athletics Championships 2024 – This is how the morning session on the fourth day of the European Championships went today

Status: 10.06.2024 17:55

The pole vault qualification became a stumbling block for European Vice Champion Bo Kanda Lita Baehre at the European Athletics Championships in Rome on Monday (June 10, 2024). 1,500 m runner Robert Farken will start in the final despite a fall. The DLV decathletes around defending champion Niklas Kaul have made a good impression overall so far. And hurdler Emil Agyekum also has reason to be happy. Six medal decisions will be made in the evening. The fourth day of competition at a glance.

We will keep you up to date in the live ticker at sportschau.de.

Pole vault – Lita Baehre, Zernikel and Blech fail to qualify in the final

Of the three German pole vaulters, two reached the final – Oleg Zernikel (Landau) and Torben Blech (Leverkusen). They jumped 5.60 m in the qualification – just like world record holder, Olympic champion and world champion Armand Duplantis from Sweden. For vice-European champion Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (Leverkusen) this height was too high on this day. “I would have liked to have made it to the final. I am definitely fit, but sometimes that is not enough in the pole vault. (…) And then you are out faster than you can blink,” said the silver medalist from Munich 2022 on ZDF.

1,500 m – Robert Farken may start in the final

The 1,500 m runner Robert Farken (SC DHfK Leipzig) was lucky in his misfortune: in his preliminary heat, he was involved in a mass crash through no fault of his own, meaning that he missed one of the required first six places in 3:42.26 minutes. However, according to the German Athletics Association (DLV), after viewing the video images, the jury decided that Farken may start in the final on Wednesday (June 12, 2024, 10:26 p.m., in the live ticker at sportschau.de). There he will meet, among others, 5,000 m European champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway, who was the fastest in the preliminary heat (3:37.65 minutes) and is aiming for a double triumph in Rome for the second time. One thing is clear: Marius Probst (TV Wattenscheid 01/3:44.70 minutes) and Amos Bartelsmeyer (Eintracht Frankfurt/3:51.42 minutes) were eliminated in the preliminary heat.

400 m hurdles – Agyekum in the final, Abuaku, Preis and Demes eliminated

It was no surprise that Olympic champion, world champion and defending champion Karsten Warholm from Norway reached the final of the 400 m hurdles in 48.75 seconds at the European Championships. But who or how many of the three German runners would advance was not quite so clear in advance. After the three semifinals, the answer is available: Emil Agyekum (SCC Berlin) will represent the DLV on Tuesday (June 11, 2024, 9:05 p.m., live on Das Erste and in the stream) as one of the eight fastest Europeans over this distance in the race for the medals. With a personal best time of 48.36 seconds, he earned his starting place. Joshua Abuaku (Eintracht Frankfurt/49.13) and Constantin Preis (VfB Stuttgart/49.68) missed the final, but they can cheer on their teammates from the stands. In the women’s semifinal, Eileen Demes (TV 1861 Neu-Isenburg) also missed out on a place in the final, finishing fifth in her race in 55.64 seconds.

Decathlon – Kaul also impresses with the shot put, Eitel in fifth place

Defending decathlon champion Niklas Kaul has made a good start to the European Championships: after a solid 100 m run (11.34 seconds) and a personal best in the long jump (7.44 m), he followed it up with a strong 15.10 m in the shot put – the bottom line is that this means twelfth place with 2,502 points in the interim results before the high jump (7.30 p.m.) and the 400 m (10.20 p.m.). The best of the DLV quartet so far is Manuel Eitel in fifth place (2,642). Felix Wolter (2,566) is tenth, Tim Nowak (2,461) is in 17th place.

The two German 200m sprinters have reached the semi-finals, which will take place on Monday evening at 9:05 p.m. In the preliminary round, Talea Prepens (TV Cloppenburg) exceeded her own expectations in her European Championship debut: she ran a personal best of 22.83 seconds. “That’s just unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it at the finish and I’m totally happy,” she said on ZDF. Her DLV team colleague Jessica-Bianca Wessolly (VfL Sindelfingen) ran a season’s best of 23.00 seconds. In the semi-finals, she is now hoping for a time with a 22 before the decimal point.

800 m – Kolberg runs into the European Championship semi-finals with season’s best time

Majtie Kolberg (LG Kreis Ahrweiler) seems to have arrived at the European Championships in good shape: in the preliminary round, she stayed just above the two-minute mark with a season’s best time of 2:00.23 minutes. But she was the fastest of all 16 runners who made it to the semifinals on Tuesday (June 11, 2024, 10:10 a.m., live on Das Erste and in the stream). “I felt so good, so I thought to myself: Why not boost my self-confidence a bit? A big ‘Q’ is really cool, I’m really happy about that,” said Kolberg in an ARD interview.

Javelin throw – Hussong reaches final, Lowka eliminated

In the women’s javelin qualification, the participants had to throw 60.50 m to qualify directly for the final on Tuesday (June 11, 2024, 9:36 p.m., live on Das Erste and in the stream). Christin Hussong (LAZ Zweibrücken) was more than two meters away from that after her three attempts. But with 58.21 m she still made it to the final as the ninth best in the qualification.
