Bad news for the DFB team before the start of the European Championship on Friday (June 14, 2024) against Scotland: Youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic cannot take part in the tournament. National coach Julian Nagelsmann nominated Emre Can instead.

The Dortmund captain last played for the German national team in September 2023 and was not only not considered by Nagelsmann for the European Championship. Can had even expressed criticism of not being personally informed by the national coach about his non-nomination – now he is even included.

“We want another number six in the squad,” said Nagelsmann, adding that Can “immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team. We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and who knows how to handle the pressure. He can well fulfil the profile that we need now.”

Pavlovic plagued by bad luck in the DFB team

Meanwhile, Pavlovic continues to be plagued by bad luck at the DFB. In March, the 20-year-old was called up to the national team for the first time after strong performances at FC Bayern Munich, but he had to withdraw shortly beforehand due to an injury. During the preparation for the European Championship, an infection put him out of action, which now resulted in the withdrawal.
