A rain of medals for the German half marathon teams at the European Athletics Championships in Rome: Amanal Petros won bronze in the individual ranking on Sunday (June 9, 2024). The German men also took third place in the team ranking in a close decision. The DLV women took silver.
The race past the city’s sights was dominated by the Italians, who celebrated a double success by favorite Yemaneberhan Crippa (1:01.03 hours) and Pietro Riva (1:01.04) in the individual ranking as well as victory in the team ranking.
The DLV runners Petros and Samuel Fitwi Sibhatu, who ran a courageous race and finished fifth in a personal best time (1:01:17), were in the leading group from the start and even took the lead after a good 19 kilometers. But the two Italians, who come from shorter distances, benefited from their sprinting strength. Petros was also unlucky when he stepped on the inside edge on the final lap in the stadium and lost his rhythm. But he fought for the medal he had hoped for in 1:01.07 minutes.

“It was a team effort, we pushed each other. It was fantastic. I was a bit lacking in speed at the end, but I’m happy,” said the German record holder in the marathon and half marathon on ARD. He now wants to be at the top of the 42.195 kilometer race at the Olympic Games in a few weeks.
