European Championship round of 16: Germany is in the European Championship quarter-finals after victory against Denmark

Germany – Denmark 2:0 (0:0)

Germany is in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship after a 2-0 win against Denmark. Due to a heavy thunderstorm, the game had to be interrupted for almost half an hour in the first half. However, the DFB team was able to come back on track in the second half. Kai Havertz converted a handball penalty in the 53rd minute. Jamal Musiala scored the second goal of the win (68th minute). National coach Julian Nagelsmann spoke of a “bizarre knockout game”.

The Danish national team hardly brought any calm into their game at the beginning of the match. Germany played offensively from the beginning and began the match with a few missed chances. Almost every player had a shot on goal. But the Dane Christian Eriksen also stood in front of the German goal a few times. Nevertheless, the first half of the match remained goalless. The German team clearly dominated with 62 percent possession.

In the 36th minute, the game was interrupted because of the thunderstorm. Lightning could be seen over the Westfalenstadion and loud thunder could be heard. Heavy rain and hail also made the game impossible. The public viewing area in the Westfalenpark also had to be evacuated. The mood of the spectators remained relaxed: Danish fans danced in the water falling from the stadium roof, several people tried to protect themselves from the rain with their flags. After about 20 minutes, the decision was made: the game will continue.

The second half began with a moment of shock for the German team: Danish player Eriksen did manage to score, but from an offside position, as the video assistant recognized. Just a few minutes later, he was called into action again when Joachim Andersen handled the ball in the penalty area – a penalty for Germany. Kai Havertz, who was playing in his 50th international match, shot and scored to make it 1-0 (53rd minute). Jamal Musiala then managed to extend the lead in the 68th minute.

“Oh, how beautiful it is,” sang the German fans. The DFB team is dreaming of winning its fourth European Championship. It is still unclear who it will play against in the quarter-finals. Next Friday at 6 p.m., it could face Spain in Stuttgart in the big test of the European Championship. But the Spanish team must first master its round of 16 match against outsiders Georgia on Sunday evening.
