European Championship round of 16 in Dortmund: UEFA wants to check security in stadiums

After a man climbed under the roof of the stadium during the round of 16 match in Dortmund, UEFA wants to review the security measures in all European Championship stadiums. The football association and the Dortmund police “will follow up on this situation and investigate how the accused was able to enter the stadium unhindered and get onto the roof,” the police said.

During the match between Germany and Denmark (2:0), a 21-year-old climbed under the roof of the Dortmund stadium. According to initial findings, the police said the stadium visitor wanted to take photos from there. There was therefore no danger “at any time”.

Area under the roof normally closed

According to the information, the Osnabrück player was noticed at 10:11 p.m. when he climbed from the walkway onto the struts of the roof structure. The game continued unhindered during this time. Access to the area under the roof is usually closed. The walkway platforms under the roof are used, among other things, for the maintenance of the stadium’s technical equipment.

According to police, after the final whistle at 11:44 p.m., the man followed instructions and climbed back onto a walkway. “Special forces arrested him there, handcuffed him and searched him. The man was not carrying any dangerous objects,” police said. Camera equipment was found in his backpack.

21-year-old is known to police as a roofer

During questioning on Sunday night, the 21-year-old reportedly said he wanted to take “good photos.” The man is known to the police and is considered a roofer – people who climb tall buildings and film or take photos.

This incident is not the first security breach at the European Championships. Most of the time it was about streakers who were able to get onto the pitch. At the opening game in Munich, a YouTuber dressed up as the European Championship mascot and using fake accreditation gained access to the interior of the Munich stadium. In a video he published, he describes his actions in detail. The weak point was the security checks at the stadium in particular.
