A man climbs under the stadium roof during the European Championship match in Dortmund. The motive of the 21-year-old from Osnabrück is initially unclear. Pictures show that he was masked.
According to video footage, the man who climbed under the roof of the Dortmund stadium during Germany’s European Championship round of 16 match was masked and carrying a large backpack.
The footage, which was published by the English newspaper “Daily Mail”, shows the man being arrested by the police. The officers announced on Saturday evening after the match that the man was a 21-year-old from Osnabrück. The police stressed that there was no danger to the spectators.
According to the information, the man climbed onto the roof of the stadium at 10:27 p.m., during the second half. The video recordings show that he climbed from the accessible platforms under the stadium roof onto the struts of the roof structure. So far there is no evidence that the 21-year-old wanted to endanger the stadium visitors, the police statement said.
Questioning the security concept
Emergency services approached the man after the final whistle and spoke to him. A helicopter also illuminated the roof of the stadium. The published video briefly shows the stands, and by the time the man was arrested, many spectators had already left the stadium.
The incident raises questions about the security concept for the European Championship. There were repeated incidents during the group phase when spectators got onto the pitch to take a photo with the players. The European Football Union UEFA referred to the police statement. “We have no further comment,” the umbrella organization said in response to a request from the German Press Agency.
