European Football Championship, Group A: Switzerland misses victory against Scotland

Scotland and Switzerland drew 1-1 in their second group match at the European Football Championship. An own goal by Swiss Fabian Schär gave the Scots the lead in the 13th minute. A short time later, Xherdan Shaqiri scored the equalizer for Switzerland in the 26th minute.

In the second half, Dan Assane Ndoye narrowly missed the lead for Switzerland (58th minute). After a challenge from Kieran Tierney, his shot went just wide of the left post. Tierney was injured in the process and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

Missed opportunities for Switzerland

In the 84th minute, Breel Embolo scored what appeared to be the winning goal for Switzerland, but the goal did not count – Embolo was offside. Shortly before the final whistle, the Swiss had another chance to score, but Zeki Amdouni headed the ball just a few centimeters past the left post (90th).

“We had the better start, but the Swiss held up well,” said Scotland captain Andrew Robertson after the match in Cologne. “We need to rest, we need to prepare and then be fit for Sunday. We can take a lot from today.”

“Looks good for the next round”

“It’s a point and we’ll take it,” said Schär after the game. “In the end, the point is okay. We’re second and things are looking good for the next round,” said his teammate Manuel Akanji. With the draw, Switzerland misses out on an early place in the round of 16. Germany, on the other hand, is safely in the round of 16 after today’s 2-1 win against Hungary.

Scotland lost 5-1 to the German national team in their opening match of the European Championship on Friday in Munich. Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 in their first match on Saturday. The last two group matches will take place on Sunday evening. Germany will face Switzerland in Frankfurt, while Hungary will play Scotland in Stuttgart at the same time.
