European Football Championship, Group D: Round of 16 within reach for Austria after victory against Poland

Poland – Austria 1:3 (1:1)

Austria has won its second group match at the European Championships against Poland. With the three points, coach Ralf Rangnick’s team is now level with France and the Netherlands, who will face each other this evening – and has every chance of reaching the round of 16.

The chances of the Polish team led by former Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski have dropped to a minimum after their second defeat.

The Austrians attacked the Poles aggressively in their half. Gernot Trauner scored Austria’s fastest goal at a European Football Championship in the 9th minute. After a cross from Mainz’s Phillipp Mwene, Trauner headed the ball into the corner.

The 0:1 was a wake-up call for the Poles. They were now able to free themselves from their opponents better and also had some notable chances. The equaliser by former Hertha professional Krzysztof Piatek in the 30th minute with a follow-up shot from close range was well deserved.

The Austrians, who had been so dominant at the start, suddenly became unsettled. Marcel Sabitzer did make a few moves at the end of the first half. But Poland had the big chance to take the lead with a free kick from substitute captain Piotr Zielinski, which was saved by ÖFB goalkeeper Patrick Pentz.

Lewandowski could not prevent defeat

In the second half, Christoph Baumgartner (66th) and Marko Arnautović (78th/penalty) finally scored for the Austrians, who were considered dark horses. Star player Robert Lewandowski, who was substituted after an hour and made a lightning comeback after recovering from a torn muscle, could not prevent the defeat.
