European Football Championship, Group F: Georgia reaches round of 16 after historic victory

Georgia – Portugal 2:0 (1:0)

The Georgian team beat the favorites Portugal in the European Championship Group F match and thus moved into the round of 16. In front of a sold-out stadium in Gelsenkirchen, the Georgians won 2-0 (1-0).

Although Albania still holds the record for the earliest goal at a European Championship, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s goal in the second minute of the game came very close. An error by António Silvas in the build-up play had allowed Mikautadze to get the ball, who then passed it to Kvaratskhelia on the left. Kvaratskhelia scored into the right corner of the goal. Teammate Georges Mikautadze (57th minute/penalty) then increased the lead with a penalty.

After the first goal, Portugal gained control of the game. Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo, among others. Ronaldo was shown a yellow card in the 28th minute for complaining about tugging on his shirt in the penalty area. Portugal had further chances to score – all of which were unsuccessful. Kvaratskhelia’s free kick in the 36th minute could have made it 2-0, but teammate Gvelesiani missed the ball with his head, sending the ball just past the right post. Mikautadze increased the lead to 2-0 in the second half.

After the first few minutes, Turkey played with more pressure and shifted the game more into the Czech team’s half.
