European Triptych Presents Challengers for Victories in Formula 1: Toto Wolff’s Insights

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff notes that although Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing should never be leveled, it appears that the upcoming triptych on European soil will offer several contenders for victories.

The Red Bull Racing team is having a difficult series in the current Formula 1 season. While the racing team managed to win 21 of the 22 races held last year, Ferrari, McLaren and at times Mercedes have emerged as serious competitors in recent weeks. The question remains whether Red Bull Racing has actually compromised on the competition, or whether the combination of the current problems surrounding the RB20 and the recent circuits it has raced on have temporarily set back the formation from Milton Keynes.

However, recent races have certainly created tension at the top of the field, something that many fans of the sport were longing for. Verstappen managed to win ‘only’ two of the last four races, and especially in the constructors’ championship, everything is a lot closer together than a year ago at this time. Toto Wolff expects an interesting triptych on European soil. The next three races will be held consecutively in Spain, Great Britain and Hungary.

Toto Wolff looks ahead

“Barcelona could be interesting,” Wolff told Sky Sports after the race in Canada. “I don’t know if Red Bull will be strong there. Austria has always been their territory. Last year we said McLaren was stronger there after their comeback, for us it has never been a good track. I think you can see Max and Red Bull cannot be ruled out, they are still the benchmark. However, McLaren has made enormous strides, and you should not forget Ferrari. Today they were not close, but two weeks ago they were the benchmark.”
