Evan Fournier Becomes NBA Free Agent After Detroit Pistons Opt Out

“I’m going to be able to start again with a new team next season,” Evan Fournier projected on Thursday, during the French team’s media day. The wish of the Blues guard was granted on Friday according to journalist James Edwards, who follows the Detroit Pistons for The Athletic. The Michigan franchise has chosen not to activate its option to keep the 2021 Olympic vice-champion for the 2024-2025 fiscal year at $18.8 million (€17.5 million). That is, the last year of the $78 million (€72.6 million) four-year contract signed in the summer of 2021 with New York.

Fournier is now a free agent and will be able to sign with a new NBA franchise from Monday midnight (French time, Sunday 6 p.m. on the east coast of the United States), when the NBA summer market opens. Placed in New York by Tom Thibodeau, he found playing time in Detroit where the Knicks sent him on February 8, just before the deadline to trade players. In 29 games with the Pistons, Fournier averaged 7.2 points (37% shooting), 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

Selected with the 20th pick in the 2012 draft, the native of Saint-Maurice (31 years old) has played 723 matches since the start of his NBA career. Only five Frenchies have done better across the Atlantic: Tony Parker (1480), Boris Diaw (1183), Nicolas Batum (1122), Rudy Gobert (826) and Joakim Noah (734).
