➤ Berlin fan zone will be expanded for Germany game

The Berlin fan zone in front of the Brandenburg Gate will be expanded for the German national team’s third and final group match. The organizer, Kulturprojekte Berlin, announced that they expect a significantly larger crowd for the match against Switzerland on Sunday (9 p.m./ARD/Magenta TV). That is why the expansion of the fan zone on Straße des 17. Juni will be used for the first time, extending to Bellevueallee.

According to the organizers, this means that a total of 70,000 people can watch the game in the fan zones in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building, where the capacity is limited to 10,000 guests. While all of the European Championship games will be broadcast in the area near the Reichstag, this will only be the case in the fan mile in front of the Brandenburg Gate when Germany is playing or there are games in the Olympic Stadium. Ittrich on European Championship referees: Performances have improved

Bundesliga referee Patrick Ittrich has praised his colleagues’ performances so far at the European Championships. Because the players are allowed to complain less due to a rule change, “you get the impression that the performances have improved. But that is actually the case,” said the 45-year-old as an expert on MagentaTV on Saturday afternoon: “The performances so far have been fundamentally solid, consistently stable,” said the Hamburg native.

His German colleagues are in action on Saturday. Daniel Siebert will be in action for the first time in this tournament in the afternoon in the match between Georgia and the Czech Republic, and Felix Zwayer will be in action for the second time three hours later in the match between Turkey and Portugal. “I am incredibly happy that both of them are allowed to represent our country and the German refereeing system and I will be watching closely,” said Ittrich. Fan from England destroys oversized European Championship ball

An English football fan is apparently responsible for the XXL European Championship ball at the Hamburg fan festival. As the Hamburg newspaper “Abendblatt” reports, a fan kicked the popular photo object called “Football Love” so hard after the Three Lions’ 1-0 victory against Serbia on June 20th that the damaged ball had to be removed from the blue podium and scrapped.

At least the fan was remorseful and reported his mistake immediately. Now a replacement ball from the manufacturer adidas is to be brought to the Hanseatic city within the next few days so that visitors to the Heiligengeistfeld can take snapshots again. (sid)

Julian Nagelsmann has all 26 players at his disposal

Julian Nagelsmann can also field his best possible eleven in the last group match at the home European Championship. The national coach had all 26 of his national players fit and available for the final training session for the duel with Switzerland on June 23 (9:00 p.m./ARD and MagentaTV) in Frankfurt.

Nevertheless, with a view to the round of 16, Nagelsmann must weigh up whether he will trust the same starting lineup as in the 5-1 win against Scotland and the 2-0 win against Hungary: Antonio Rüdiger, Jonathan Tah, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Robert Andrich have previous injuries and would be suspended in the first knockout round if they received another yellow card. A draw would be enough for the DFB selection to take first place in Group A. (sid)

Bielefeld legend helps France in Mbappé crisis

A world star picks up his cell phone and texts Bielefeld? Hello Fabi, this is Kylian? It wasn’t quite like that – and yet ex-professional Fabian Klos helped the French national football team and Kylian Mbappé with his undisputed expertise on the subject of face masks.

“Funny enough, I received a request from an acquaintance who said that the French camp had contacted him, asking if I could pass on the contact details of where I had my mask made,” reported the long-time Arminia Bielefeld striker in the Copa TS podcast.

He does not know “whether the mask was made there, but the contact was passed on.” If the recommended mask maker was actually chosen, “Mbappe can at least be sure that his face will be very well protected in the future.” Klos would only have been reluctant to give up his own mask spontaneously: “I would wash it quickly beforehand.” (sid)

Deschamps defends himself against suspicion after waiving Mbappé

Didier Deschamps did not want to hear of a bluff involving Kylian Mbappé. “If it had been a decisive match, I might have thought twice about it,” he said. In the 0:0 draw between the European Championship title favorites and the Netherlands, France’s national football coach left his star player, goalscorer and captain on the bench after he broke his nose. “He has bruises,” stressed the coach of the Équipe Tricolore after the match in the Leipzig European Championship stadium: “After everything that happened, I thought it was the better decision.”

Mbappé sustained the injury during the 1-0 win against Austria. On June 20, Deschamps assured that everything would be done to ensure that Mbappé would be available to play against the Dutch. In fact, however, the 25-year-old future Real Madrid professional was not even one of the players warming up on the sidelines for a possible substitution. (dpa)

Why Germany plays in white against Switzerland

The schedule for Germany’s last group match confuses some fans. Switzerland – Germany. That is the schedule for the game on June 23 (9:00 p.m./ARD and Magenta TV) according to official UEFA rules.

The reason is the continental association’s seeding system for the preliminary round. Germany was placed A1 as the head team. Switzerland was drawn into fourth place in Group A. In the dummy schedule, A1-A2, A3-A4, then A1-A3, A2-A4 play first. But then the teams are swapped. A4 gets home advantage, so to speak. Otherwise, the Swiss would always be the visiting team and would always have a disadvantage when it comes to choosing the color of their jersey, for example. The formal home team gets to choose that.

Since the DFB team is visiting on June 23rd, they will again play in their white home jerseys. Switzerland has chosen their first red kit. The pink Germany jersey, which is so popular with the fans, will therefore not be worn again as it was in the 2-0 win against Hungary. (dpa)

Ronald Koeman is angry with the referee team

National coach Ronald Koeman has no understanding for the VAR decision in the 0:0 European Championship group match between the Netherlands and France. A goal by RB Leipzig professional Xavi Simons in the 69th minute was disallowed by the video referee.

Teammate Denzel Dumfries is said to have obstructed France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan in an offside position. He was standing next to the goalkeeper when the football went into the goal. “Personally, I think the goal should have counted,” said Koeman.

“Dumfries’ position is offside, that’s true, but he’s not bothering the goalkeeper. Therefore, it’s legal,” said the former international player, who was also annoyed that the decision had taken so long. “You need five minutes to check that, I don’t understand that. Once again: he’s not bothering the goalkeeper.”

Fellow coach Didier Deschamps, however, thought the decision was the right one; it was obvious, he stressed. “It was immediately clear to me, but I don’t know why it’s taken so long,” said the French coach. (dpa)

Deniz Undav leaves out the chocolate bar as a European Championship participant

National soccer player Deniz Undav also follows a ritual from his daily club life before the European Championship games. The VfB Stuttgart striker drinks an energy drink (Red Bull), as he reported before the last group game against Switzerland.

To get a good feeling for the game, the 27-year-old, who made his first European Championship appearance in the 2-0 win against Hungary in his current adopted home of Stuttgart, also treated himself to a sweet treat. “That was my ritual. I feel best then. But I have to say that I left the chocolate bars alone before the game,” he said.

He has also adapted to the Red Bull can. “For the past two years I have only been drinking sugar free,” said Undav. “I need it before the game so that I feel good. If you then perform well on the ball, nobody can say anything.” But Undav also knows: “If things aren’t going well, you’re quickly criticized.” (dpa)

Poland is the first team out

Immediately after the decision was made, the Polish media lamented the impending European Championship exit of the team led by superstar Robert Lewandowski in clear terms. “The end of hope,” wrote the tabloid “Fakt.” “The Polish national team has lost its last one percent chance,” said the sports newspaper “Przeglad Sportowy.”

After their 1:3 defeat against Austria in Berlin, the team had little chance of reaching the round of 16. The goalless draw between France and the Netherlands sealed their fate.

“He who comes last is eliminated first,” wrote the portal “goal.pl”, alluding to the fact that the team had only qualified for the tournament via the playoffs and is now the first team eliminated. (dpa)
