Expensive Consequences: Borussia Mönchengladbach Fined 23,000 Euros for Pyrotechnics Offense

Fans of Borussia Mönchengladbach set off pyrotechnics at the cup quarter-finals in Saarbrücken on March 12, 2024. This now has expensive consequences for the Foals.

For some fans, it is simply part of visiting the stadium, but for the clubs, it is always a major nuisance: Pyrotechnics and fireworks in the stands usually have expensive consequences for the clubs. Now Borussia Mönchengladbach has also been affected.

Because, as has now become known, Borussia has to shell out a five-figure sum. The DFB sports court sentenced Gladbach to a fine of 23,000 euros. The association announced this on Tuesday (June 18, 2024).

Borussia Mönchengladbach: 23,000 Euro fine for pyrotechnics offense

The background to this is the arson of Gladbach fans on March 12, 2024. At the time, the Foals had to pack their bags in the cup quarter-finals after a 1:2 defeat to a third division team. As if that wasn’t annoying enough, there is now a punishment on top of that.

The official DFB statement states: “During the DFB Cup match at 1. FC Saarbrücken on March 12, 2024, Mönchengladbach spectators set off a total of 23 pyrotechnic items.” The DFB Control Committee brought charges. Borussia has already agreed to the verdict.

As the DFB further announced, Borussia Mönchengladbach can use up to 8,300 euros of the fine for “security or violence prevention measures”. The association must be provided with evidence of corresponding initiatives by the end of the year.

Even if the penalty does not threaten the club’s existence, it is still extremely annoying at the end of the day. Borussia and sports boss Roland Virkus (57) really need every euro in the summer transfer market to strengthen the squad for the coming season.

Because one thing is also a fact: hardly any Gladbach fan would wish for a season as messed up as the last one. In addition to a strong team on the pitch, avoiding further unnecessary pyrotechnic penalties would certainly also be helpful.

The verdict for Saarbrücken is not yet official. The home fans also set off fireworks during the quarter-final match against the Bundesliga team. Last season, the third division team had to pay more than 60,000 euros in pyrotechnics fines in the cup alone.
