Exploring the Olympic History of Archery: Dominance of South Korea and the Rise of Latin America

Paris was the city that saw Archery used for the first time in an Olympic event, and this happened in 1900, during the celebration of the second edition of the Games.

It then continued to be contested until Antwerp 1920, with the exception of Stockholm 1912.

From there there was a pause of 52 years, to reappear at the Munich Games in 1972.

Since its reintroduction, archery has seen a steady rise in popularity and participation, with an increasing number of countries competing for Olympic medals.

Today, archery is one of the most exciting and visually stunning sports at the Olympic Games, attracting athletes and spectators from around the world.

In its first stage, Belgium was the leading nation with 20 medals, 11 of them gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze.

However, in what we might call the modern era, starting in 1972, South Korea has enjoyed great dominance, winning more than 20 gold medals.

What happened in Tokyo?

South Korea dominated archery in Tokyo, winning the women’s individual, the team events for both sexes and the mixed event, which was being competed in for the first time.

The only thing that escaped them was the gold medal in the men’s individual event, where they surprisingly missed out on the podium, which was dominated by the Turkish champion Mete Gazos and the Italian Mauro Nespoli and the Japanese Takaharu Furukawa, second and third, respectively.

The great figure of the last Olympic event in the Japanese capital was the Korean An San, who won 3 gold medals, Individual, Team and Mixed.

Mexico the Best Nation in Latin America

Latin America, although it has had outstanding performances, has Mexico as the only country that has managed to win medals, three in total.

In London 2012, the great joy came, when Aida Román and Mariana Avitia finished second and third in that order, putting Mexico in the historical medal table of Olympic Archery.

The last medal was won in Tokyo 2020, in the debut of the mixed modality, in which Luis Álvarez and Alejandra Valencia finished with the bronze medal.

For Paris 2024, the Mexicans are once again the great hopes of the region, while the Koreans will continue to be the big favourites.
