F1 Ferrari disappointed, Sainz: “I was hoping for better”. Leclerc: “I did ‘Banzai’ it wasn’t enough”

The Cavallino drivers on the Zeltweg qualification. Carlos: “It will be a tight race with Mercedes.” Charles: “I made the mistake, especially in turn 6 I pushed myself to try to make the time.” Vasseur: “There will be a lot of battle on the first lap”

June 29 – 6.17pm – MILAN

After the Sprint qualifiers on Friday and the short race in the morning, it was clear that it would not be an easy qualifying for Ferrari. In the end, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc left behind a McLaren (that of the penalized Piastri, who was deprived of the third time for exceeding the track limits) and a Red Bull (that of Sergio Perez). But the balance is still poor because in addition to the stratospheric Max Verstappen on pole, in front of the red car there are also Lando Norris and George Russell. In this race it seems that the first two have a superior pace, it is easy to predict that on Sunday the great duel for Ferrari will be with Mercedes, also considering that Leclerc, seventh, will immediately face Lewis Hamilton.

The best of the two Ferrari drivers was Sainz: “My qualifying was positive – said the Spaniard – I was always there fighting in the top five. It wasn’t easy, qualifying was tight. I did my best, Mercedes seems to a little ahead. It will be a tight race with them on Sunday.” Team principal Fred Vasseur explains what didn’t work like this: “We took a small step forward compared to Friday – he said – But it’s certainly not enough because we wanted to be further ahead on the grid. Overall we took a step forward, Leclerc he was doing a good lap, then he had a lockup in turn 4, but before that moment he was much faster than the previous attempt. This means it was a good lap. We saw today that there is a sort of DRS train. and if you take the right train you can stay on that train. I imagine there will be a lot of battle on the first lap. Without a doubt we have solved the brake temperature problem. The negative surprise yesterday was the bouncing which went beyond expectations. and this hurt the riders in the high-speed corners between turns 7 and 10. Today we put things right a little, even if it’s not enough.”

Charles Leclerc describes his desperate last attempt, which cost him a trip into the gravel: “I always want to try, today I tried but it didn’t pay off – he said – it’s a shame because in turns 1 and 3 I was two tenths faster, in turn 4 I braked and a few meters later I locked the front and went straight. In turn 6 I did a bit of a “Banzai” hoping that the car would hold, but I ended up in the gravel. It’s a shame because with the used tire it went much better. The feeling was good which means that the team had done a good job. But in Q3 I made a mistake, I would have liked to get a better result. By best result I mean third place, certainly not seventh”.
