George Russell on Mercedes won the Austrian GP, the eleventh round of the Formula 1 world championship. The British driver preceded the Australian Oscar Piastri, second with McLaren, and Carlos Sainz with Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes was fourth and Max Verstappen fifth at the finish line, protagonist of a duel for first place with Lando Norris (McLaren) which led them to contact, forcing the Dutchman to change a tire and the Briton to retire.
At the end of a more than eventful race at the Red Bull Ring, Nico Hulkenberg also scored points, sixth with the Haas, Sergio Perez, only seventh on the Red Bull, then Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Daniel Ricciardo (RB) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine). Charles Leclerc, however, finished eleventh, having been forced to stop immediately after the start to change the front wing, damaged in a contact with Piastri, and had to do a chase race.
Lando Norris attacking Max Verstappen due to contact between the two at the end, which forced the Briton to retire and relegated the Dutchman to fifth place. “I behaved well, I had a good race, he didn’t – began Norris on Sky Sport -. We are friends but if he doesn’t admit that he made a mistake today he will lose a lot of my respect. It was stupid of him to do those maneuvers to prevent me from overtaking, all in an irregular manner. I’m very angry,” added Norris.
Sainz: ‘Happy with the podium but we’re still missing something’
“I’m happy with the podium today, taking 15 points is a good result for us, in a really eventful race.” Carlos Sainz said it in the first interviews after the Austrian Formula 1 GP. “We still don’t have what it takes to fight for the podium and today we took advantage of the fact that there was some action in front of us – continued the Ferrari driver, who, looking towards the next GP, in a week at Silverstone, added -.
