FC Bayern Basketball: A Season of Triumphs and Setbacks

Finally, there are certificates in the World Champion League!

SPORT BILD has closely followed the 2023/24 season in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga, observing, researching and analyzing on match days and between games. Now the basketball reporters are awarding the BBL final certificate.

Final certificate BBL, part 1: FC Bayern Basketball

Champions! Cup winners! But disappointing in Europe…

For the FC Bayern basketball players it was a season of ups and downs.

Squad: “It’s the best squad of all time on paper,” cheered FC Bayern President Herbert Hainer (69) before the start. After the horror season 23/24, when Bayern missed the cup and the final round of the Euro League and were eliminated in the semi-finals of the BBL championship, the team was upgraded. With Pablo Laso (53), Bayern boss Marko Pesic (47) brought in a European legend as coach. NBA champ Serge Ibaka (34) was also added. No team in Germany has more world champions in its squad: Andreas Obst, Niels Giffey and Isaac Bonga returned with a lot of self-confidence after the World Cup title.

The goal was clear from the beginning: the next championship title after 2019 is a must.

But it took a long time for the team to get into its stride. “We had a lot of new players, a new coach, for some it was their first time in Germany,” says Laso. His conclusion: “It wasn’t an easy year, but we did a lot of things well.”

BBL: Bayern delivered in the league. They went into the playoffs as league leaders – and ended up winning the title. Bayern were unbeaten from the end of November to March (14 wins in a row). Their dominance in the league: impressive. In the end, they suffered six defeats in the main round, all avoidable, mostly due to individual errors. But when it mattered against the top clubs, Bayern were there. They didn’t let themselves down against defending champions Ulm, or against the strong surprise teams from Chemnitz and Würzburg. In the playoffs, captain Vladimir Lucic and co. managed a 3-1 win against Ludwigsburg, a 3-0 win against Würzburg and finally a 3-1 win against Berlin. Then there was the convincing win in the cup.

Euroleague: Disappointing. Bayern set themselves the minimum goal of reaching the finals of the best teams in Europe – and failed, finishing the season in 15th place. “Many of the defeats were close, it’s not as if we had no chance,” says Marko Pesic and concludes: “I am very disappointed that this team, whose potential I am convinced of, did not show the consistency that is needed to at least reach the play-ins. It was a season of missed opportunities.”

Bayern narrowly failed several times. Routine, self-confidence and cleverness were lacking.

Mia san Mia: The Bayern football motto has long since reached the basketball players, or to be more specific: the basketball players embodied the motto even better last season than the record football champions, who remained without a title. Because whenever there was a setback, Ibaka and Co. hit back straight away. There were never two defeats in a row (across all competitions).

Extraordinary: Bayern managed to capitalize on the hype in basketball after their World Cup victory in the city. The world champions demonstrated their closeness to the fans, and the double celebration in Munich also showed that the stars are hands-on. Selfie and autograph requests were fulfilled for hours, and 28 home games in the BMW Park were sold out last season (6,500). From October, the Euro League games will be held in the new SAP Garden. Season ticket pre-sales are going well there too (over 2,500 tickets have already been sold).

Homework: Now it’s up to Marko Pesic: Can he keep Serge Ibaka? What will happen to world champion Isaac Bonga? One thing is clear: Pesic has to come up with something in order to finally be able to attack the top in Europe. Financially, Bayern (around €24 million) are still behind the top teams like Real Madrid (€42 million) or Athens (€35 million).
