FC Bayern Munich Adds Austrian Head of Performance to Revamp Sports Division

The German record champion is revamping its sports division.

With Walter Gfrerer, the Munich team is also bringing an Austrian on board. The 51-year-old comes from Bundesliga rival VfL Wolfsburg and will be responsible for athletics and performance across the club as Head of Performance at FC Bayern from July 1st.

He is responsible for the professional players, the FC Bayern women’s team and the youth team at the FC Bayern Campus. The Austrian, who also has a past with AS Monaco and Red Bull Salzburg, previously worked as an athletic trainer for the “Wolves”.

“We are delighted to have appointed Walter Gfrerer as Head of Performance for FC Bayern. He brings with him a wealth of experience from his various positions and will provide new impetus,” says Sports Director Max Eberl.

Further restructuring

In addition to the commitment of the Austrian, Kathleen Krüger, former Head of Team Management & Project Lead Sport, will take up a staff position in the Board of Management’s Sports division as Senior Leading Expert Sport Strategy & Development.

Maciej Jagiellowicz will be the team leader for the licensed player division, and Samuel Geiler will be moving to his team internally from FC Bayern’s partner support department. Bastian Wernscheid, who previously worked in team management for three years and has been with the club since 2017, has been supporting sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund as a sports consultant since January 1st.
