Is the first major reinforcement now on the way? Sky reported on Sunday afternoon that FC Bayern have reached a verbal agreement with defender Jonathan Tah. According to the report, they have agreed on a transfer with the international player in the summer, but there have not yet been any talks with Tah’s club Bayer Leverkusen.
Sky also reports that Tah wants to leave the Werkself, but Leverkusen is doing everything it can to keep the 28-year-old. A possible transfer to Bayern could therefore still fail, despite a rumored agreement between the club and the player.
Tah himself had commented on the speculation just a few days ago – but he avoided giving a direct answer. “There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks and months,” said the defender, who is also in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s European Championship squad, on Thursday at the DFB selection’s training camp in Blankenhain. This is “understandable given my contractual situation” – Tah’s contract with the Werkself runs until June 30, 2025, and his contract has not yet been extended beyond that. If this remains the case, Bayer could only collect a transfer fee this summer or in the coming winter break. He can therefore “of course understand the questions and speculation”.
The defender won the league and DFB Cup double with Bayer Leverkusen last season and was one of the pillars of successful coach Xabi Alonso’s team. Tah moved from Hamburger SV to the Rhine in 2015 for 9.5 million euros. According to transfermarkt.de, his current market value is 30 million euros.
