FC Bayern Players Shine in European Championship Round of 16

Germany, France, the Netherlands, England and Austria are in the round of 16 of the European Championship – and with them all FC Bayern players who played for the record champions last season and were nominated. Only one returning player has been eliminated.

FC Bayern is used to starting preparations with few players due to the large number of tournament participants. Although there are ten tournament participants, this is the least there were in 2016, everyone should get enough vacation after their country leaves. There is no set number of days, but there will be discussions with each player: who might want to start earlier? Who, in return, needs a few more days off to be fresh for the challenges of the new season? The first to be affected is Josip Stanisic, who was eliminated with Croatia as the worst third-placed team in the group and is now returning to FC Bayern after his one-year loan. His contract extension until 2029 is also expected to be announced shortly.

The other ten European Championship players could all make it to the quarter-finals, but there will be no direct duel between Bayern participants in the round of 16. The workload and performance records of these players could hardly be more different after the group phase. Matthijs de Ligt is only a reserve for the Netherlands, Kingsley Coman for France and Thomas Müller for Germany are at best part-time workers for a few minutes. Konrad Laimer for Austria, Dayot Upamecano in France’s central defence and of course Harry Kane, captain of the Three Lions, are undisputed regulars. Despite scoring a goal, Kane is part of the so far disappointing English team, who will have to improve significantly in the knockout phase if they want to compete for the title.

Three potential Bayern players still in the tournament

While Leroy Sanè has hardly made a positive impression in his three substitute appearances, Manuel Neuer has been convincing in the German goal so far, Joshua Kimmich is set at right back and Jamal Musiala, with two goals and top performances against Scotland and Hungary, is certainly the best of all Bayern players in the tournament so far – despite a somewhat less conspicuous performance against Switzerland.

With the Portuguese Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons for the Netherlands and DFB defender Jonathan Tah, three top players who are on FC Bayern’s transfer radar are also playing in this tournament. Conversely, de Ligt, Upamecano, Coman and Kimmich could leave Munich this summer. These decisions will be made after the European Championship, perhaps during their vacation.
