More about the Regionalliga Nord

If the law of series holds true, Darmstadt 98 will be the German Cup winner in 2025. The Bundesliga relegated team will be Teutonia 05 Ottensen’s opponent in the first round. They recently played against RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen – with the respective opponents starting with an 8-0 win and winning the cup at the end of the season.

Much more important than the opponent at the end of August, however, is the fact that the Teutons managed a title hat-trick in Hamburg. While the bonus of around 200,000 euros played no major role in the annual budget in recent years, it now forms a significant part of personnel planning. The new sports director Kevin Weidlich therefore has a little more leeway for the new upheaval.

Huge upheaval in summer

The 34-year-old was carried on his shoulders and thrown through the air by his team after the 4-0 victory in the cup final against USC Paloma. Whether it was his last game is anyone’s guess; for now he will concentrate on his new tasks alongside his predecessor and president Liborio Mazzagatti. Weidlich has plenty to do, as only five players remain from the cup winners’ squad: captain Marcus Coffie, Nick Gutmann, Nick Brisevac, Mohamed Abd El Aal Ali and junior goalkeeper Jan Niemann. The rest are in demand in many places, especially Ole Wohlers at second division relegated SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

The new staff certainly does not have the lofty goals of previous years, but is intended to ensure a more modest appearance in order to bring spectators back to the Hoheluft stadium with lively football. Weidlich is therefore particularly proud that he can bring a player from his own youth team up: Jesse Keller. “As an U-19 player last season, he played many games in our second team. We are very happy that a player from our youth team is continuing his career at Teutonia,” explained Weidlich.

Toumi becomes coach number eight

The new coach Nabil Toumi – the eighth coach since the promotion in 2020 – can also look forward to players who have proven themselves in the regional league: Christian Stark (most recently ETSV Hamburg) has 107 fourth division games under his belt, Yannik Nuxoll was the regular goalkeeper in Norderstedt until his injury, and Emmanuel Ntsiakoh (20, HSV II), Noel Denis (22, Eimsbütteler TV) and Tom Kankowski (21, FC St.Pauli II) are also promising talents and should become real pillars in the new squad. The top transfer at the moment is Manasse Fionouke, who recently celebrated staying in the league with Bremer SV. “We are happy that we were able to bring a Hamburg boy back to his hometown. We are sure that he will strengthen our defense and play an important role for us,” commented sports director Weidlich. Even if one or two more transfers are certainly necessary: Darmstadt 98 should remember these names carefully if the club wants to become cup winners…
