Fernando Galé and Adrián Martínez Secure Bronze in European Cup Double Compound Bow Event

Fernando Galé and Adrián Martínez achieve bronze in double compound bow in the European Cup.

Together they form a solid, strong couple with great complicity. Fernando Galé and Adrián Martínez have only been competing internationally for three seasons and continue to achieve success in archery. The Aragonese and the Madrid native, current continental runners-up, have achieved a new medal, a bronze in the European Cup held in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic). It is the fifth medal they have added to their record in the doubles event.

In the qualifying round of 144 arrows they finished in second position with 1,379 points, which is a new record for Spain. The battle for the medals began in the quarterfinals against the Brazilians Diogo de Souza and Reinaldo Charao, whom they won 154-142. In the semifinals they lost 150-153 to the Iranians Alisina Manshaezadeh and Hadi Nori, who ultimately won the tournament. And in the duel for bronze, the Spanish, after scoring four tens in the last round, beat the French Maxime Guérin and Thierry Joussaume, 153-151, their executioners in last year’s European final.

It is a shame that this event is not part of the Paralympic programme, as they would be candidates for medals. In the individual event, Adrián Martínez was eliminated in the first round, while Fernando Galé was one point away from making it to the semi-finals. “We make an incredible team, we support each other to give our best. Against France we did not know what was going to happen until the last arrow and in the end we won by a few points in a tough qualifying round,” said the man from Madrid. “We shot very well, this championship is a fetish for us, every time we come we win a medal,” added the man from Aragon.

Looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Games, it has been Fernando who has been left with the only ticket that Spain has in archery, after being the most consistent in the qualifying process. “It’s a dream, I still don’t believe it, I’ve been there for very little time and it’s the most an athlete can aspire to, I’m very happy,” commented the man from Zaragoza. For his part, the Madrid native regrets having had a “weaker season in terms of points and the level shown.” He was the one who achieved the place for the country last year in the World Cup in Pilsen (Czech Republic) and of which he feels proud: “It’s a shame not to qualify, but Fernando did much better, I’m sure he will be great and I will be supporting him.”
