In the game of group D, the French national team won 1:0 against Austria, which showed a commendable performance, did not sit on the defense and created a good counterplay. The only goal was scored in the 38th minute after Mbappé’s cross, when Austrian defender Maximilian Weber unsuccessfully headed the ball into his own goal. This game ended painfully for Mbappe, because at the end of the match he hit his face on the opponent’s shoulder and broke his nose. Fortunately, surgery will not be necessary, but the European football star will have to play with a face mask in the future. It is interesting that the day before the match, at the press conference, Mbappé started talking about politics, uncharacteristic of a tournament of this level, calling on the people of France, especially young people, to go and take part in the parliamentary elections, opposing the extreme right, or the National Union led by Marine Le Pen.
French national team captain Mbappe believes that extremists are knocking on the door of power and their victory in the parliamentary elections is unacceptable.
The entire Belgian national team was also figuratively bled as the third-ranked team in the FIFA world rankings lost 0-1 to Slovakia, who are 45 places lower. The Slovaks had an excellent first half, with Ivan Šranc opening the scoring in the eighth minute of the game. In the second half, the Belgians dominated, Romelu Lukaku even sent the ball into the opponent’s goal twice, but with the involvement of video replay or VAR, both goals were canceled – in the first case, the back, in the second, the partner had played with his hand. There is no need for Belgium to panic yet, because they are still the favorites in Group E, but they will definitely not have an easy time against Romania or Ukraine.
Important news for three Latvian clubs as well, because the draw for the first round of the Eurocups has taken place.
In the Champions League, “RFS” football players will start the qualification against “Larne”, the champion of Northern Ireland for the last two years, which reached the third round of qualification in the European Conference League three years ago. The first match will be held in Riga on July 9 or 10. On the other hand, “Auda” and “Liepāja” will have to find their way in the Conference League and host teams from the Faroe Islands. The Čekavniks will have to play against the island’s most titled club “B36” of Toršhavn, and the Kurzemniks will have to play against the “Vikingur” of Leirvík.
