PhD students FC Groningen and NAC Breda will have the honor of opening the new Premier League season on Friday, August 9. FC Groningen spectacularly defeated Roda JC on the last matchday of the Kitchen Champion Division, meaning that the Groningen team is back in the Eredivisie after one year. NAC Breda managed to qualify for the Kitchen Champion Play-Offs at the last minute as number eight, but took the last promotion ticket after a great series of matches.
Four matches are scheduled for Saturday. Cup winner Feyenoord will face Willem II at home. The people from Tilburg became champions in the Kitchen Champion Division last season and are officially returning to the highest arena after two years. Later in the evening, NEC Nijmegen and FC Twente will play against each other (6:45 PM), as will FC Utrecht and PEC Zwolle (8:00 PM). National champion PSV ends Saturday evening with the Brabant derby against RKC Waalwijk (9 p.m.).
On Sunday, the Eredivisie starts with a nice match between Sparta Rotterdam and Heracles Almelo (12.15), after which both Almere City FC – AZ and Go Ahead Eagles – Fortuna Sittard will play their first Eredivisie match at 2.30 PM. Ajax ends the first round with a home match against SC Heerenveen (4.45 pm).
