Football Copa América: Argentina wins 1-0 – Concerns about assistants

World champions Argentina defeat Chile with difficulty and advance to the quarter-finals of the Copa America. An assistant referee has to be treated in the extreme heat.

Defending champions Argentina struggled to beat Chile at the Copa América in the USA and are now in the quarter-finals after their second win. Lautaro Martínez of Inter Milan scored in the 87th minute to make it 1-0 (0-0). The world champions thus became the first team to advance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford near New York. One day after his 37th birthday, superstar Lionel Messi was unable to shine this time.

Coach Lionel Scaloni’s Albiceleste had previously beaten Canada 2-0. In the last match of the group phase, Argentina will face Peru next Saturday, while Chile will play Canada on the same day. With 15 titles, Argentina is the record champion of the Copa América. Canada beat Peru 1-0 (0-0) in Kansas City, celebrating its first victory in a Copa América match.

There was a stir around assistant referee Humberto Panjoj from Guatemala. Shortly before the end of the first half, the referee suddenly found himself lying near the sideline. Canada’s goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was the first to rush to his aid before Panjoj was carried away on a stretcher. Temperatures in the stadium were reportedly around 35 degrees at the time. Panjoj stood in the sun for the entire first half. Many spectators in this area went to the stands, which were in the shade, for the second half.
