The European Championship is just around the corner and football fans can look forward to a total of 51 games. Four broadcasters are involved in the TV experience, but not all games are free to air. Here is an overview of the most important things about the broadcast.

Where can I watch the games on TV?

All matches of the home European Championship can be seen on television, but only 46 are free to air. ARD and ZDF will broadcast 17 matches each. The two public broadcasters will show the most important matches of the tournament. These include the matches of the German national team, the opening match and the final.

The free TV broadcaster RTL will show twelve more games, including a round of 16 and a quarter-final. All games will be broadcast exclusively by Telekom for its customers on MagentaTV. Why are there so many channels?

In 2019, Telekom unexpectedly secured the complete media rights for the European Championship in Germany from the European Football Union UEFA, beating out ARD and ZDF, among others. A year and a half later, the group and the public broadcasters agreed on a complicated deal. In a comprehensive contract, Telekom shared a large part of the rights for the 2024 European Championship with ARD/ZDF and in return received broadcasting licenses for all matches at the 2020 European Championship and all matches at the 2022 World Cup.

How many people are watching?

Live games at major football tournaments are guaranteed ratings. At Euro 2020, which took place three years ago, 27.49 million people watched the DFB team’s match against England. But recently, the interest of German fans has noticeably waned in light of the DFB team’s failures. The Qatar ratings were around 40 percent lower than those of the previous World Cup in Russia.

“A European Championship in Germany, in our own country, has even more potential than a European Championship or World Cup in other countries,” said ZDF team manager York Polus. But he did not want to commit himself: “We have not defined any exact figures.” For him, however, a key factor is the performance of the home team. “I am convinced that if the German team works well, it has the potential to unite the entire nation behind it.”

Who moderates?

ARD and ZDF rely on well-known presenters. The ARD presentation team consists of Esther Sedlaczek and Alexander Bommes, and the ZDF team consists of Katrin Müller-Hohenstein and Jochen Breyer. RTL and Telekom work together, and the presenter team consists of Johannes B. Kerner and Laura Wontorra.
