Football fans: UEFA imposes fines on associations from Albania and Serbia

UEFA has fined the football associations of Albania and Serbia 10,000 euros each for “provocative” messages from fans. The European football union has not yet provided any details.

British media also reported on a racist incident during England’s European Championship group match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. According to reports, monkey noises were made towards English players on Sunday. The fan allegedly responsible was not arrested or expelled from the stadium during England’s 1-0 win in Gelsenkirchen, even though stewards and police were present. UEFA announced that an investigation was underway into alleged discriminatory behavior. However, this wording is not included in the announcement of the penalties.

The Serbian association must also pay a fine of 4,500 euros because objects were thrown from the stands.

It is not the first time that the Serbian and Albanian associations have had to pay fines imposed by UEFA. A European Championship qualifier between Serbia and Albania in 2014 caused a particular stir when it had to be abandoned due to fights between players and spectators. The trigger for the physical violence was a flag with the image of Greater Albania that had been flown into the stadium by a drone. UEFA fined both associations 100,000 euros each and Serbia a point deduction and two home games without spectators. Relations between Serbia and Albania have long been strained by the Kosovo conflict.
