The long-awaited transfer of France’s star player Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid is complete. The Spanish top club announced the signing of the 2018 world champion on Monday. As his contract with PSG expires in the summer, Real does not have to pay a transfer fee – thus the Champions League winner managed the next coup two days after the 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund. “A dream comes true,” said Mbappe.

The 25-year-old (“Nobody can understand how excited I am”) has been given a five-year contract with the “Royals” until mid-2029. There had been repeated speculation about the sporting future of the vice world champion with a view to his expiring contract. Mbappe, who was born in the Paris suburb of Bondy, has been playing for PSG since his move from AS Monaco in 2017 for a total of 180 million euros and is the Parisians’ record goalscorer. He won the championship six times and the cup four times with the capital club.

In 308 games for PSG, he scored 256 goals. But one thing didn’t work out: the captain of the French national team has not yet been able to win the Champions League. In 2020, he reached the final of the premier class with PSG, but lost 1-0 to FC Bayern Munich. Last season, he was eliminated in the semifinals after two 1-0 defeats against Borussia Dortmund. BVB lost 2-0 to Real in the final on Saturday. Now Real’s next direct hit followed. “You can’t hit the table harder with your fist,” wrote the Spanish sports newspaper “Marca” immediately.

No transfer fee, but a lot of signing money

No transfer fee was due, but in such cases players and agents are usually happy to receive a generous signing-on fee. According to reports, in this case it is said to be 150 million euros.

In 2022, Mbappe was about to move to Real, his favorite club from his youth. At that time, however, he extended his contract in the French capital. In the future, however, Mbappe will now play in the Real Madrid jersey. The team also includes three of his national team colleagues, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, with whom Mbappe will meet the Austrian team in two weeks’ time at the start of the European Championship.

Olympic participation questionable

The deal with Mbappe was apparently negotiated weeks ago. However, the move to Madrid may mean that Mbappe will not be able to play at the Olympic Games in Paris as he had hoped. On Monday, the striker was not named in the provisional 25-man squad by coach Thierry Henry, apparently due to resistance from Mbappe’s future employer. Even French President Emmanuel Macron wants the striker to be part of the games. Mbappe himself has also expressed his desire to play for France.
