“football was merciless”, saddens Modric

Despite his goal, the captain of Croatia and his selection were caught on the edge by Italy on Monday.

Croatian midfielder and captain Luka Modric said that the football was merciless” Monday, after Italy equalized at the last second (1-1) in their final group match. A result which places Croatia in a more than uncomfortable situation.

“It’s very stressful, we fought until the end, but unfortunately football was merciless with us tonight, it was cruel”declared Luka Modric at a press conference, as he was elected man of the match after becoming the oldest scorer in the history of the European Championship at 38 years and 289 days.

Football is such that it often makes you smile, but sometimes it makes you very sad, as was the case today”added the Croatian, who is certainly experiencing his last major competition with his selection.

“The football gods don’t always smile on us, but we can be proud of the way we represented our country tonight”concluded the captain, his face closed in front of the press, adding: “I don’t know where the referee found eight minutes of added time”. With two points, Croatia must wait to know if it is among the four best third-placed teams to hope to qualify for the round of 16.
