After the goalless draw between the Netherlands and France last night, many foreign media talked about Xavi Simons’ disallowed goal. There is also criticism of Memphis: “He had difficulty making an impact.”
After the match, the BBC studio last night was mainly about Simons’ disallowed goal. His goal in the second half was disallowed by the VAR after long deliberation because Denzel Dumfries was said to have hindered the goalkeeper in an offside position.
Former England internationals Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker believe the goal should have counted. “France has been very lucky,” says Shearer. “If you see it from behind the goal, the goalkeeper cannot dive due to his body position. As time passed, the pace of the match slowed down,” writes Kicker.
Lack of effectiveness
The French L’Equipe talks about a lack of effectiveness among the French. “Antoine Griezmann and his teammates lacked efficiency against the Dutch,” writes the sports newspaper, which states that the France captain ‘did not have his sights set’.
The British newspaper The Guardian calls the referee’s decision to disallow Simons’ goal ‘understandable’, but points out that it took a very long time for the VAR to make a decision.
Not easy
The newspaper further concludes that France should have won the match, but that the large number of missed chances by the French made it clear that they missed their ‘talisman’ Mbappé.
