(Incheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Son Hyun-gyu = It was belatedly revealed that Yoo Yeon-gyu (38), a former national badminton team member who was investigated by the police in the United States on suspicion of attempting to sexually assault a Korean woman, was acquitted by the prosecution.

According to the legal community on the 24th, the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office did not indict Mr. Yoo, who was accused of attempted rape, last month.

The prosecution did not hand Mr. Yoo over to trial, saying there was no charge due to insufficient evidence.

In a phone call with Yonhap News that day, Mr. Yoo said, “I am glad that the injustice has been resolved with the decision to acquit me,” but added, “I will feel greater responsibility for all my words and actions with this incident as an opportunity.”

Mr. Yoo was suspected of attempting to sexually assault a Korean woman, Mr. A, in the United States in July of last year.

He was first arrested by U.S. investigative authorities following Mr. A’s report, and later returned to Korea after being released on bail.

After returning to Korea, Mr. A again filed a complaint against Mr. Yoo to the Korean police, and the police forwarded the case to the prosecution in January.

Mr. Yoo won a gold medal in the badminton team event at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and received medals three times at the World Championships.

He is known to have worked as a freelance coach until last year after retiring in 2022.
