Former professional Redick is set to sign a four-year contract with the famous basketball club from California. This is reported by the always well-informed insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Redick from TV expert to NBA head coach

Redick himself played for 15 years in the best basketball league in the world for teams including the Orlando Magic, New Orleans Pelicans – and also their city rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers.

The guard only ended his career after the 2020-21 season; he never won a title, by the way. Then Redick, who was born in Tennessee, took a different career path and most recently worked as a TV expert at ESPN, who have just announced Redick’s new job.

LeBron relationship as a reason for commitment?

The interesting thing is that Redick has a good relationship with Lakers superstar LeBron James, and they both run a podcast together. And: Redick was only drafted three years after (!) the still active superstar.

The Lakers parted ways with head coach Darvin Ham in early May after being eliminated in the first round of the play-offs.

Dan Hurley, coach at the University of Connecticut, was supposed to be his successor, but recently turned down a million-dollar offer from the 17-time champions. Hurley (51) would reportedly have been able to earn 70 million dollars (approx. 65 million euros) in six years.

After Hurley’s cancellation, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss reportedly agreed on Redick and held intensive discussions with him over the past weekend.

Basketball IQ speaks for Redick

Pelinka was said to be particularly impressed by the 39-year-old’s basketball IQ. In addition, Redick’s ability to relate to players and work with them on a collegial level.

Apparently, they want to surround Redick with an elite coaching team to make it easier for him to get started in his first coaching position.
