Former NFL Kicker Steve Weatherford Opens Up About Super Bowl Victory Depression

Former kicker Steve Weatherford revealed this Friday that winning Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants, corresponding to the 2011 season, was one of the most depressing nights of his life.

“The night we won the Super Bowl It was one of the most depressing times of my life. After all the celebrations and parties something came over me. I was sitting in my hotel room and a deep wave of depression washed over me. All the early mornings, years of hard work and sacrifice had borne fruit and I did not feel different,” the former player wrote in a letter that he published through his social networks.

Steve Weatherford is 41 years old, he came to NFL hired by the New Orleans Saints, a team in which he played from 2006 to 2007. From there he went to the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, with whom he played in 2008. He spent two seasons with the Jets.

His best time was with the Giants (2011-2014), with whom he obtained his championship ring that made him enter a deep depression despite the fact that in the NFL title game in which the New Yorkers won 21-17 to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, he had an outstanding performance.

“I couldn’t have done better. I played the best game of my life and we won, but all I got out of it was feeling empty. I decided then that I couldn’t stay in the NFL much longer, as I needed to find a deeper meaning to my life,” he explained.

In that game Weatherford kicked four times with an average of 40.8 yards per attempt, three of those kicks were located inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. None of his four punts were returned.

The former player born in Crown Point, Indiana, retired at the end of the 2015 season in which he played for the Jets.

Currently Steve Weatherford runs a program that seeks to help men overcome depression problems.

“I could have stayed in the NFL, continued growing my supplement business or been on television, but there is nothing that lights me up more than helping men live a life of purpose.
