Laura Siegemund celebrates the mixed doubles title at the French Open in Paris alongside a Frenchman. It is her third triumph at one of the four biggest tournaments in the world. Now the German is heading to the Olympics. But with whom? She wants clarity.

After jumping in the air, Laura Siegemund fell into the arms of her doubles partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin, then posed beaming with joy with the silver trophy. The German tennis player celebrated the third Grand Slam title of her career with her victory in the mixed doubles final of the French Open on Thursday afternoon. Siegemund enjoyed the triumph so much because it was so unexpected.

“It was a last-minute thing, I actually didn’t want to play mixed doubles here,” the 36-year-old revealed on Court Philippe Chatrier after her 6:4, 7:5 win against Desirae Krawczyk from the USA and Neal Skupski from Great Britain: “But Edouard wrote to me two hours before the deadline and I always wanted to play with him. I couldn’t say no. I think it was a good decision.” The two will receive a prize money of 122,000 euros.

In 2016, the doubles specialist had already triumphed at the US Open with Croatian Mate Pavic. Four years later, she won the Grand Slam tournament in the women’s doubles with Russian Vera Zvonareva at the same venue.

Siegemund went onto Court Philippe Chatrier with great anticipation, especially since she was sure of the support of the audience thanks to her French doubles partner. “A Grand Slam final – that’s what everyone dreams of, no matter what competition. I think it’s great to play on a stage like that,” said the Metzinger after reaching the final in Paris.

Previously, Siegemund had failed in the first round of the French Open in singles, and in the women’s doubles with partner Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic she was eliminated in the round of 16.

Zverev is apparently considering Kerber as an Olympic partner

She also wants to compete in all three competitions at the Olympic tennis tournament in Paris. In the mixed doubles, she would like to compete with Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, as she did at the United Cup in Australia at the beginning of the year. “I asked if he wanted to play with me, but there was no answer,” Siegemund reported. “I find it a bit difficult if it’s a last-minute decision from him. I think he should take a clear stance on that.”

In the past, Zverev and three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Angelique Kerber had speculated on starting together in the competition. If Zverev does not want to compete in the mixed doubles, Siegemund would also start with Davis Cup doubles player Tim Pütz.

Zverev himself has reached the semifinals of the French Open for the fourth time in a row on his title mission in Paris. The 27-year-old won his quarterfinal on Wednesday evening against Australian outsider Alex De Minaur 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 despite an average performance and is now only two wins away from his first Grand Slam tournament victory.
