French Tennis Federation in Crisis: Can it Recover in Time?

While French tennis, once again, did not really shine at the French Open at Roland-Garros 2024, the French Tennis Federation is experiencing serious turmoil. Will she be able to raise her head before it’s too late?

It has been a sad constant for too long. Every year, the French women and men are mocked at Roland-Garros, due to their lack of results. The 2024 edition will not have escaped the rule. In the men’s event, Corentin Moutet made it to the round of 16. Same performance, in the women’s event, for Varvara Gracheva, a newly naturalized Russian. That’s about it. For the rest, Carolina Garcia and Adrian Mannarino have only been delusional. A deplorable observation that is reminiscent of the deleterious atmosphere that currently reigns within the French Tennis Federation.

The French Tennis Federation faces its responsibilities

In a long paper published this Wednesday by our colleagues from L’Équipe, the French Federation takes its position. We learn, for example, that a “growing discomfort” has taken hold among many employees. Layoffs and sick leave have become distressingly commonplace. The industrial tribunal was contacted three times. The communications director stopped working just before Roland. A security manager flatly said stop during the Porte d’Auteuil tournament.

And that’s not all. The emblematic Nicolas Escudé, national technical director, was sidelined in favor of Ivan Ljubicic. Without forgetting the dismissal of the general director, Caroline Flaissier, who had succeeded a certain Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. An audit has taken place, and an action plan should come into force in the coming weeks. Let’s hope that this bears fruit, and that the FFT regains a semblance of serenity. Which will hopefully rub off on French players in the future.
