The draw for Wimbledon 2024 has several surprises in store, and from the first round, superb posters await French tennis.
A lawn that we hope will be blessed for the Blues and a great show from the first round! The draw for Wimbledon 2024 delivered its verdict this Friday and it promised a “show” from the start for French tennis.
On the gentlemen’s side, Ugo Humbert16th in the world and French number 1, will obviously be highly anticipated. After a promising semi-final in s’Hertogenbosch, the Metz native then had a rather unfruitful grass court season. But Ugo, 8th finalist in London in 2019, is capable of competing with the world’s best on fast surfaces. Before that, he will first have to face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko, 58th in the world, in the first round.
The men’s singles table
The French No. 2 is also a great turf specialist. Nevertheless, Adrian Mannarino, 22nd in the world and three times 8th finalist here (2018, 2017, 2013), will have to pull out all the stops as soon as he enters the fray. And for good reason: he will be opposed to his compatriot Gael Monfils ! 40th in the ATP, “la Monf'” is still as dashing and has just qualified for his first semi-final of the year on the grass of Mallorca.
There will be other great posters from the first round in the men’s table: Arthur Rinderknech (68e) will have to do with Kei Nishikori, former 4th world champion; Constant Lestienne (90th) will have a lot to do against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, 25th ATP, and recent finalist at Queen’s.
Firmly established in the top 50, Arthur Son (34th) will leave with the favor of the forecasts against the Swiss Dominic Stricker, an opponent he beat at the Masters Next Gen last year. For his second participation, the Ile-de-France native will try to win his first match at Wimbledon. Another Arthur, Cazaux (98th), will have to be wary of the Belgian Zizou Bergs, who has been through the qualifications and is capable of setting his matches alight. A superb match in perspective!
Finally, the draw reserved different fortunes for the four Blues who passed through the qualifiers in Roehampton: Hugo Gaston (70th) will face Alexandre Müller in a 100% blue poster; Lucas Pouille (213th) will have his chances but will have to shine against the solid Serbian Djere; Maxime Janvier (225th) will face a seed, the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang, semi-finalist in Halle, while Quentin Halys (223rd) will have to cross swords with the American Chris Eubanks, quarter-finalist in London last year!
* Corentin Moutet, who was due to face Alex De Minaur, withdrew this Friday due to injury.
Parry enters the scene against Osaka
In the women’s category, there will be five of them battling it out on the London turf. As at Roland-Garros, Caroline Garcia (23rd in the world) is the only seeded Frenchwoman, ensuring her an affordable entry into the running. It will be against Anna Blinkova. Note that “Caro” has reached the second week at Wimbledon twice, two round of 16 matches in 2022 and 2017.
The women’s singles table
On the other hand, Diane Parry (53rd) was given one of the worst possible draws. The Boulonnaise will have the formidable honour of challenging the Japanese Naomi Osaka, wild-card, but above all quadruple winner in Grand Slam and who is coming back strong after a maternity break. One of the shocks of this first round for sure.
Varvara Gracheva (68th) will try to confirm his superb adventure at “Roland” against the Ukrainian Tsurenko. As for Clara Burel (43rd) and Océane Dodin (80th), they will have a good card to play against two qualifiers, the German Eva Lys and the Ukrainian Daria Snigur.
