Kévin Vauquelin won the second stage of the Tour de France alone on Sunday June 30 in Bologna, after dropping his breakaway companions on the second ascent of the terrible San Luca hill.

This is the second French victory in two days after that of Romain Bardet. The last time that two first stages of the Tour were won by a Frenchman dates back to 1968 when Charly Grosskost achieved the double.

Great hope of French cycling, Kévin Vauquelin, who is competing in his first Tour at the age of 23, has just become French vice-champion in the time trial.

After making the difference in San Luca, and with about ten riders still to go, he stormed to victory on the descent to Bologna, while the favourites were about three minutes behind.

“It’s completely crazy, yesterday I was at the bottom of the bucket. We had a perfect day,” he reacted.

For his part, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar took the yellow jersey. The race favorite attacked on the San Luca hill, followed only by his great rival Jonas Vingegaard to steal the lead in the general classification from Romain Bardet, winner of the first stage.
