from night parties to being Kroos’ squire and the balance of Germany

Robert Andrich’s career has been atypical, with a very slow development. He did not make his Bundesliga debut until he was 25 (he was just a month away from turning 25). At that age, most people would say that if he hasn’t made it to the top, he’s not going to make it, but the midfielder had to go through a series of processes. He was born in Potsdam and played in the youth ranks of Hertha Berlin. “I lived with two other players. The regional league (the fourth division) was not good, we were much better than our rivals, but the club did not want to be promoted and it was impossible to be relegated with that group of players, so everything was relaxed. So on Wednesdays I went out for a while, sometimes finishing at six in the morning and sleeping for two hours before training,” he said in an interview with the official Bayer Leverkusen website.

From Third to the Bundesliga

Andrich’s apprenticeship was not over. He did not make his debut in Hertha’s first team and went to Dynamo Dresden, in the Third Division. His time of partying continued and when the team was promoted in 2016, he barely played, and that frustrated him and made him reflect. His maturity came with the next jump, to Wehen Wiesbaden. “I looked for a Third Division club that had the ambition to be promoted. The team played proactive football that adapted to my style, I met my wife… Everything went upwards,” he explained. The following season he was in the Second Division at Heidenheim and in 2019 he finally reached the Bundesliga, at Union Berlin, of which he was part of two seasons until signing for Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.

His tattoos

Xabi Alonso has been the star of his club’s historic campaign, winning the Bundesliga and Cup double without losing. He was not a starter at the start, as the pre-season was difficult because he was recovering from a metatarsal fracture. Palacios played more, but a muscle injury to the Argentinean gave Andrich more minutes, who ended up becoming one of the men of the championship. The two titles have now joined the catalogue of tattoos on his body, led by three lions on his back. “At first, they had a meaning: the scroll on my chest fit well and I wanted to put an important date, the date of my daughter’s birth. The compass above is aesthetic and Virgo on my arm is my zodiac sign. Now the tattoos have more visual motifs,” he described in “Bild”.

Germany’s balance

Before being indisputable in Xabi’s Leverkusen, Nagelsmann called him up for Germany for the first time, in October 2023. The “Mannschaft” has been in depression for a few years and the coach thinks that the key is in the midfield. Afterwards, Kroos announced his return and the figure of Andrich took on even more meaning, to act as the Real Madrid player’s squire, or already a former Real Madrid fan, since he has announced his retirement; and Gündogan. “I was looking for a player with a different profile. It is important that we not only find those with the most individual talent and the most name,” analyzed Nagelsmann, who dispensed with figures like Goretzka.

Andrich is the one who runs for everyone, the one who confronts the referee, the one who makes the foul at the right moment… “But I can also make two or three good passes,” he defends, who when he was younger, apart from He had more training with the team at home with his father, who was also a soccer player. “I try to support the team when the ball is lost and bother some opponents, but also be a goal threat,” describes Andrich. The goal he scored against Switzerland was his first with Germany… But it was annulled by the VAR. He hopes to achieve another against Denmark today in the round of 16, and to get on the scoreboard.
