From Unsung Hero to Legend: The Farewell of Nacho Fernandéz from Real Madrid

From base to European titles. From “ugly duckling” to captain. Nacho Fernandéz is leaving Real Madrid after 13 years as a professional, and many more as a boy searching for his football dream. A supporting player who became a legend in a team that got tired of winning in the last decade.

Like the entire generation that experienced post-galactic Real Madrid, Nacho collected titles. There were six Champions League wins alone.

At 34 years old, Nacho was evaluating whether he would continue another season at Real Madrid. He ended up convinced by the millions from Saudi Arabia, aware that he would have less and less space at the merengue club, and with the certainty that he said goodbye on a high note.

Nacho made 45 appearances for Real in 2023/24. It was the season with the most games in his entire career, largely due to an injury to Éder Militão. The Spanish defender proved once again that when he is called upon, he does not fail.

Rarely a prominent name in achievements, Nacho ended up surviving for more than a decade at Real, always demonstrating his virtues. There were 364 games in total, almost always as a security option among the coaches, although on rare occasions as an absolute starter.

In total, between base and professional, he spent 23 years dedicated to Real. Nacho says goodbye as a legend to pocket a few million before retirement.
