Edmundston’s Frontière FM and Matane’s Allées du Boulevard shared the honours of a double programme on Saturday afternoon in the Bas-Saint-Laurent.
In the first meeting, Frontière FM won a close victory by a score of 6 to 5. The visitors trailed 5-3 in the seventh inning when Joshua Desroches hit a double to push Tristan Cyr to the marble before coming to score the equalizing point. Ultimately, it was a defensive error that allowed Edmundston to score the victorious point.
It was a heartbreaking defeat for the locals who saw Michaël Lavoie, Raphaël Bérubé and Mathieu Fortin help their team take a 4-1 lead with productive hits.
The victory went to Patrick Morin who pitched three innings allowing two runs. For Matane, starter Pier-Alex Pelletier once again did well. In six innings, the left-hander gave up only three runs on four hits. It was ultimately his teammate Louis-Félix Noël who suffered the defeat, unable to neutralize the opponent in the seventh round.
On offense Tristan Cyr was the best on his team with two hits and two RBIs. Same thing for Michaël Lavoie who had two hits in two appearances.
Coulombe dominates
In the second game, veteran Junior Coulombe took charge on the mound in a convincing 5-1 victory. The starter allowed only five hits for a single run in a complete game.
Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Matane players showed their teeth by creating the tie on a single from Raphaël Bérubé in their turn at bat. But it was really in the second inning that the locals delivered the hammer blow with three points, notably on the double of rookie Lenny St-Gelais.
For Allées du Boulevard, Raphaël Bérubé with two hits and two RBIs as well as Louis-Félix Noël with two hits led the attack. For Edmundston, Etmel Corcino was the only one to hit two hits. On the mound, Seth Qwerzy pitched all six innings in the loss.
