The captain of the Decathlon team came in ninth, 1:13 minutes behind Yates. In the overall ranking of the eight-stage cycling tour, the East Tyrolean is in eleventh place (+3:05 min.).

Yates’ UAE teammate Joao Almeida (+0:05) came second at the mountain finish in Ticino. The Portuguese is also in second place in the overall ranking, 35 seconds behind. Third place for the day and overall is Colombian Egan Bernal (+1:11). Patrick Konrad came in 28th, and is 26th overall (+8:57).

The UAE team’s pace dictated the race to an elimination race. In addition to Gall and last year’s winner Mattias Skjelmose, another favorite, the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman, lost contact with the leaders relatively early on.
