The former Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza became the new director of the WTA Finals taking place in Riyadh this Wednesday, the first player to assume this position in the great final event of the season of the women’s tennis circuit.
The WTA announced the appointment of the former world number one and champion of the 2021 Finals in Guadalajara (Mexico), in addition to two ‘Grand Slam’ titles. Last April, the WTA circuit revealed that the capital of Saudi Arabia will host the ‘masters’ tournament from 2024 to 2026.
The 30-year-old Spanish-Venezuelan retired last April after just over a season off the slopes. “Muguruza will work with the WTA, the Saudi Tennis Federation and the Ministry of Sports to oversee the strategic planning and conduct of the event for the next three years (2024-26),” says the official note.
“In particular, she will work to grow the profile of tennis throughout the Middle East and will play a central role in promoting healthy lifestyles among young people in the region,” adds the WTA statement on its official website.
