Garbine Muguruza Named Tournament Director for Inaugural Saudi Arabia Masters

The Masters, which takes place for the first time this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 2 to 9, has a former player as tournament director: Garbine Muguruza, retired since April. The WTA announced in a statement on Wednesday: “Muguruza will work with the WTA, the Saudi Tennis Federation and the Ministry of Sports to oversee the planning and implementation of the event for the next three years. In particular, she will endeavor to increase the profile of tennis in the Middle East and play a central role in promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people in the region,” wrote the governing body of women’s tennis.

For WTA CEO Steve Simon, Muguruza is “a global role model”, “a true champion” and “the ideal candidate for this essential role”.

“I feel very privileged,” declared the 30-year-old Spaniard, who won the Masters in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2021. I know how special this event is for our top players, and I also saw its potential to inspire communities around the world. I’m excited to work with a great team to present a showcase of women’s tennis that not only grows the game of tennis, but encourages all fans, and especially girls and women, to pursue their dreams. »

Muguruza has won ten titles, including two Grand Slams: Roland-Garros 2016 and Wimbledon 2017. She was world number 1 for four weeks in 2017.
